My Tuscany Adventure

08:33

Tuscany is without a doubt my favourite region in Italy. It has everything you would imagine of Italy. The food, vineyard, architecture, history, culture...

Florence

Florence houses some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. The most popular and important sites include the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi, theBargello, and the Accademia. The churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce are veritable art galleries, and the library of San Lorenzo is a magnificent exhibition of Michelangelo's architectural genius.

Siena

Siena is likely Italy's loveliest medieval city, and a trip worth making even if you are in Tuscany for just a few days. Siena's heart is its central piazza known as Il Campo, known worldwide for the famous Palio run here, a horse race run around the piazza two times every summer.

Chianti

The borders of the Chianti region are not clearly defined but in general it extends over the provinces of Florence and Siena. This place is best known for its wine. We stopped in this town for 1-2 hours. We first stopped at a vineyard for lunch and did some winetasting, then waddle around this medieval village.

San Gimignano

San Gimignano, a small walled village about halfway between Florence and Siena, is famous for its medieval architecture and towers that rise above of all the surrounding buildings offering an impressive view of the city from the surrounding valley. At the height of its glory, San Gimignano's patrician families had built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power. Now only 14 towers have survived, but this place still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance.

One last thing, make sure you taste the "Best Ice Cream on earth" in San Grimignano. Just go for the one with the longest queue and you won't get it wrong!

Pisa

Pisa is most famous for its Leaning Tower. Many visitors arrive into this university town and visit the Piazza dei Miracoli, or Square of Miracles, where thetower, the cathedral and baptistery form the city's main attraction.

Around the square's perimeter you'll also find the Camposanto, Opera del Duomo museum andMuseum of the Sinopie which we also highly recommend visiting. A few blocks away, the Piazza dei Cavalieri once was the heart of power in the city and later the headquarters of the Knights of St. Stephen. Today, it is a center of culture and learning as the famous Scuola Normale di Pisa has its base in the Palazzo della Carovana that faces onto the piazza.

Travel Tips

Last year was my first time visiting Tuscany. I based in Florence and took a Tuscany Day Tour with +WalkaboutFlorence. It truly was one of the best tours I have ever been on! Highly recommend if you only have a day for Tuscany. Having said that, if you have a few more days to spend, I would recommend renting a car and slowly discover the country. It's magnificent!
