Just 40 minutes away from Venice, there is this colourful island, Burano. Burano is an island locates at north of Venice, and is famous for its colourful houses and lacework.

Human settlement of this beautiful island can be dated back to Roman times, when the main industry of this town was fishing. This is also why houses were painted in different colours. Its purpose was to help fishermen locating their house in the fog. Its also lacework became famous after Leonardo Di Vinci bought a piece of for the alter of Duomo di Milano. It was also said that King Louis XIV wore a Burano made lace collar for his coronation.

You may probably have heard that the best way to discover Venice is on foot and get lost in the alleys. Same applies to Burano. Just get a map and discover the town as you wish. You will find many boutique traditional lace workshops, colourful houses, laundries, family-run restaurants, and many more! But what I appreciate the most was the bond between neighbours. In a small town like Burano, everyone knows everyone and it's a community which offers help whenever your neighbour needs you.

There are plenty of restaurants along the main canal and the main street. Some of them specialise in seafood. As for prices, they are not as expensive as Venice, but still a bit pricy in my opinion.

Take a waterbus (Venice vaporetto) from Venice to Murano Faro then change another waterbus to Burano.
