Beautiful architecture, Renaissance art pieces and international fashion trend setter are only part of the deal. Florence is truly one of the most romantic places I know. As for international tourist, this is the gateway to the whole of Tuscany.
Instead of just staying at a big old grand hotel, I also enjoy staying in smaller hotels or guest houses. In small places, people tend to communicate more. I don't know about you, but I always find interactions and conversations with people from all over the world amazing. You can pick up travel tips, culture and even wisdom from these interactions. In addition, in a smaller boutique hotel, concierge and hotel staff are usually local residents who are willing and able to share with your some of their own thoughts and recommendation of your itinerary.
Hotel River locates at the centre of Florence right besides River Arno. You can reach most of the destinations on foot within 30 minutes. We reached Florence by train and took Bus 23 from Santa Maria Novella, Florence (main train station) to the hotel which only cost us EUR 2 / person (approximately USD 2.6). You can even walk to the train station if you want, and that took us 30 mins. (if you run, you can reach there in 15 minutes. And yes, we did try that... and was able to catch our train, but if you ask me again, I recommend taking a cab.)
We stayed at a Superior Room. I wouldn't say it is very spacious, but is a nice sized room in Italian standard. The room was nicely furnished with wooden furniture, leaving me a homely and cozy feeling. All furniture worked fine for me and we were able to enjoy our nights after some sightseeing during the day.
Service was excellent for us. We did not do a lot of research prior the trip. When we arrived, we just picked up a map from concierge and tried to map out our route for some popular spots. Asked a few questions at the counter and came back with whole new bunch of ideas! Fantastic!

Breakfast was included in our room rate and it was a nice one. It was a buffet style breakfast and you get plenty of choices, hot, cold, sweet and savory. But what I like the most is that you get to eat in a nice glasshouse and enjoy your first meal of the day under natural sunlight. What a good meal to start a busy day!
