As many of you may know, I went on a four-day trip to Taipei. Ever since my England and France trip, I had not been on a proper holiday. So I thought I should take a few days off to travel with my newly-retired parents.
Located at the very north of Taiwan and to the east of China, Taipei advertises itself as the heart of Asia. The city is famous for its street food, pop culture and romantic Asia cafe. This blog shares with you some of the highlights in this four days relaxing family trip.
101 World Trade Centre and Michelin Star Meal - Din Tai Fung
As we arrived late in the evening on our first day, we decided to waddle into the commercial and shopping district, 101 World Trade Centre. Taipei 101 World Trade Centre is the tallest building in Asia, with 509 metres tall.

After two hour long shopping and trying on plenty of cosmetics, we decided to sit down for a good meal. Ding Tai Fung is undoubtedly the most famous restaurant in Taiwan, if not, Asia. This restaurant serves traditional Chinese cuisine and is famous of its Xiaolongbao (Soup Dumpling). They have been awarded one Michelin Star restaurant for few years. It is worth noting that the price for this place is very reasonable given it is a long time Michelin Star winner.

We took an early night in on the first day as we needed to be well rested for Day two's excursion. Living in a city for the whole of my life, I particular appreciate spending time in nature and small villages. So we decided to take an entire day to explore a small town just outside of Taipei.
Shihfen Excursion

Just 1.5 hour train ride, we arrived in this peaceful old town, Shihfen. In Shihfen, you will be welcomed by the warmest hospitality by the locals. This town is fall of old shops, street food stalls and souvenir shops. Everyone I spoke to in my day in the town were all very friendly and helpful.
We planned to take a short walk to the nearby Shihfen Waterfall. The waterfall is the largest curtain type waterfall in Taiwan. With layers of rock at the opposite director of the water, it creates a curtain effect similar to Niagara Falls in North America. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit as the hanging bridge to the site was under innovation and will be due to open in early 2015. Luckily, we were able to take plenty of beautiful pictures of the walk.

After the walk, we had some street food and freshly press juice for lunch. Lunch was very yummy and we managed to try many kinds of food including rice noodles, fried octopus, fishballs in sweet and sour flavouring, fried sweet potato, grilled sausages and sweet potato soup with dumplings. I know what you are thinking...we probably had way too much food...don't judge cause I bet you would do the same if you were there.

Before hopping on the train to return to Taipei, we decided to follow the village tradition of releasing lantern to the sky and make a wish.

City Sightseeing - Ximending, The Grand Hotel, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Shilin Night Market
For the next two days, we decided to take it slow, meaning sleeping in and having long relaxing brunch at the hotel. Of course, typical me, I make the most of the time and manage to visit a number of sights. We have Taiwanese's shopping mania, love of night market and street food, historical architecture, history and culture!| Photo: Serafina S. Ximending Shopping District |
