My Salzburg Adventure

06:07

Salzburg can easily be one of my favourite cities in the world. I first visited this city 5 years ago, and ever since, I kept going back and planned to keep doing so... From the birth place of Mozart, main shooting location of the Sound of Music, Austrian Alps to many magnificent gardens, words cannot fully describe my love for this city. Without further ado, I am just doing to list out some of my favourite sites of Salzburg.

MUST GO Tourist Spots

  1. Salzburg Fortress (Hohensalzburg Fortress) - Not only the Fortress is packed with rich history, this is also a great viewpoint of the city. At night, you may also want to join one of their ensemble/ operatic performances. With the old architectural features, the venue provides beautiful acoustic for your enjoyment.

  2. Nonnberg Abbey - This Abbey is an UNESCO site. It gains its internaitonal fame from the movie Sound of Music where the main charater Maria came from this abbey and later married into the famous military family Von Trapp.

  3. Mozart's Birthplace - I enjoyed visiting this museum very much! The house is very well kept and is very informative if you are interested in Mozart's life and family tree.
  4. The Old Town - The best way to explore Salzburg old town is by walking and getting lost. Each alley has its own character. From beautiful hanging shop signs, pebble pavements to the backdrop of the Fortress, every corner is perfect for your photoframe.

  5. Mirabell Palace - This garden is certainly one of the most romantic ones I have been, I can easily sit there for an afternoon to people watch and soak up in the sun. If you are familiar with the plot in the Sound of Music. You will instantly recognise this place as the 'Do-re-mi' scene.

  6. Hellbrunn Palace (The Tricky Fountain) - Another Sound of Music scene!! This is where the young couple sing 'Sixteen to Seventeen'. This palace is also famous for its trick fountain where the baron used to trick his guests with some sophisticated water-powered features.

  7. Salzach Boat Ride - Its a relaxing way to see Salzburg from the water. Good to relax your tired feet from all the walking. Go see for yourself!

Excursions/ Salzburg's Surroundings

If you have a couple more days in the city, which I think you should, I highly recommend visiting some of below sites. Salzburg's surroundings has some of the most beautiful Alps landscapes, lakes and peaceful villages.

  1. Untersberg- Untersberg is a legendary local Salzburg mountain that provides fascinating 360 degree view of Salzburg and Bavarian Alps in Germany. It is only 30 minutes bus ride from Salzburg city centre and a modern cable car will take you up 1700m above sea level. Up in the mountain, you can hike your way along the ridge or simple sit back with a drink and soak up the natural view.

  2. Hallstatt - Hallstatt is my family's favourite place in Europe. It is an unbelievably spectacular place and will take your breath away. Apart from the mountains, lakes and other natural features, this town is full of unique architectures and cultural events. Hallstatt locates near the Hallstätter See in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut. I have written a seperate blog on this town (ClickHere)

  3. St Gilgen /St Wolfgang - If you do not have enough time to make Hallstatt. I highly recommend taking a half day from the city to visit the infmaous lake district of Salzburg. I think below photo says more than my descriptions...

Travel Tips

If you intend to stay in Salzburg for good couple of days. I would recommend getting yourself a Salzburg card at the train station or any official tourist information centre. This card is great value for money if you enjoy sightseeing.
